this picture always just makes me laugh.

And speaking of laughing with the Simpsons: I write for a website called the Wheelhouse Review, and my post today was about Simpsons Trivia, which I participate in every month in Brooklyn. Enjoy!

longreads:

“In 1988 when my biology teacher told me to see if I could find any information about Henrietta, neither one of us could have imagined that more than twenty years later, I’d publish a book about her having spent most of my adult life looking to answer a question he inspired in that classroom. Before my book came out, I tracked down that biology teacher, now long retired, and sent him a note: “Dear Mr. Defler, here’s my extra credit project. It’s 22 years late, but I have a good excuse:  No one knew anything about her.” He was shocked.  I was just one of thousands of students he’d taught in countless huge auditoriums, most of us (myself included) looking disaffected and half asleep. He didn’t remember that moment in class when he first told me about Henrietta, but I did. Which is an amazing thing about classrooms: You never know what random sentence from a teacher will change a student’s life.” — Rebecca Skloot

“What’s the Most Important Lesson You Learned from a Teacher?”

This is our November book, FYI.

Welcome to A Novel Idea

In January of 2006, I started a book club in New York City on Craigslist. The goal was to bring together readers from all over the city once a month to discuss a variety of books. I had no real plans besides that.

Now in its 5th year of existence, the group meets with a solid group of about 12 people once a month. We read a variety of books: fiction, nonfiction, biography, graphic novels, history and everything in between. The members of the club have become friends, traveling partners and Facebook friends. Those who are no longer involved with the group still stay in touch, and comment on the books we are reading, even they are not participating in the meeting themselves. In a word, the group is very successful.

Because of the magic of SEO and posting this club on other websites, its popularity has grown. So I thought I would make a nice looking place for those who are interested in us to find.

If you would like to join A Novel Idea, the best way to do that is by joining through our goodreads page. I keep it up to date with what we’re reading and where we’re meeting. You can also follow us on Twitter (@ANovelIdeaNYC).

Thanks for following, and Happy Reading!
